Employment Pass Category II

The Employment Pass Category II targets mid-level professionals earning between RM5,000 and RM9,999 per month. It is the most commonly issued EP category in Malaysia and covers a broad range of professional roles in technology, engineering, finance, and other knowledge-economy sectors. The pass is granted for up to 24 months and is renewable, subject to the employer demonstrating that the position still requires foreign expertise.

Unlike Category I, the EP Category II is tied more strictly to the sponsoring employer. Holders cannot freely change employers — a new application must be submitted by the prospective new employer. Dependents are generally permitted for holders earning above RM5,000 per month, though the conditions are less favorable than for Category I. Spouse work authorization requires a separate application and is not guaranteed.
