Green Visa

The UAE Green Visa is a five-year renewable residence permit aimed at skilled employees, freelancers and self-employed professionals who want independence from a single employer. Launched in 2022 as part of the UAE's wider visa overhaul, it sits between the standard two-year employment visa and the 10-year Golden Visa.

Its defining feature is self-sponsorship. A skilled employee holding a Green Visa is not tied to a company in the way a normal work visa demands - losing or changing a job does not automatically end residence, and there is a longer grace period to find new work. Freelancers and self-employed people can sponsor themselves entirely, using a freelance permit from a recognised authority instead of a corporate sponsor. Green Visa holders can also sponsor their spouse, children up to 25, and parents. For mid-career professionals who do not meet the Golden Visa's high salary or investment thresholds but want stability and mobility, the Green Visa is the practical middle path - a five-year horizon without the precariousness of employer-bound status.

Three groups qualify. Skilled employees need a valid employment contract, a job classified in the first, second or third occupational levels by MOHRE, a bachelor's degree or equivalent, and a minimum monthly salary of AED 15,000.

Freelancers and self-employed applicants need a freelance or self-employment permit from MOHRE or a free-zone authority, a bachelor's degree or specialised diploma, and proof of annual income from self-employment of at least AED 360,000 over the prior two years - or evidence of equivalent financial solvency. All applicants need a valid passport, a clean record and to pass the medical fitness test. The Green Visa does not require a UAE company to act as sponsor, which is its core distinction from the standard employment visa.

Step 1: Confirm your track - skilled employee or freelancer/self-employed - since the documentary proof differs sharply between the two.

Step 2: Freelancers first obtain a freelance permit from MOHRE or a free-zone authority; skilled employees ensure their MOHRE contract reflects an eligible occupational level and the AED 15,000 salary.

Step 3: Gather your attested degree, salary certificate or income proof, passport copy and photographs.

Step 4: Apply through the ICP smart services portal or a GDRFA channel, selecting the Green Visa category and uploading your evidence.

Step 5: After preliminary approval, complete the medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometric capture.

Step 6: The five-year residence is issued and stamped; you can then sponsor dependents. Processing typically takes two to four weeks for a complete file. Freelancers should secure the permit first, as the Green Visa cannot be issued without that underlying authorisation.

Government fees for the Green Visa total roughly AED 2,300-3,500 for issuance and stamping, plus around AED 1,070 for the medical test and AED 370 for the Emirates ID. Freelancers face an additional cost for the freelance permit itself - typically AED 7,500-20,000 depending on the issuing free zone or MOHRE category, renewed annually or biannually. Sponsoring each dependent adds about AED 4,000-6,000. Health insurance is mandatory and priced separately. Budget for document attestation if your degree was issued abroad. There is no recurring visa fee during the five-year term beyond renewal at expiry.

A complete Green Visa file is usually processed within two to four weeks. For freelancers the timeline effectively starts earlier, because securing the underlying freelance permit can itself take one to three weeks depending on the authority. Preliminary approval, the medical test and Emirates ID biometrics add one to two weeks. Delays most often come from unattested degrees, income evidence that falls short of the AED 360,000 threshold for the self-employed, or an occupational level on the contract that does not match Green Visa criteria.

Once issued, your five-year Emirates ID becomes your operational identity for banking, leasing and healthcare. Activate mandatory health insurance straight away. Because the Green Visa is self-sponsored, a skilled employee who changes or loses a job keeps residence and gets a generous grace period to re-enter employment - a significant safety net compared with the standard work visa.

Freelancers must keep their underlying freelance permit current; if it lapses, the Green Visa's basis collapses. Track your income, since renewal will again test the self-employment threshold. You can sponsor your spouse, children up to 25 and your parents by submitting attested relationship documents. Plan ahead for the five-year renewal and ensure your qualifying salary, occupational level or income record still holds at that point.
