Highly Skilled Migrant

The Highly Skilled Migrant visa (Kennismigrant) is the Netherlands' go-to work permit for international professionals. Your employer must be an IND-recognized sponsor — most major companies and tech firms already are, which means processing takes just 2-4 weeks (compared to months in many other European countries). The salary threshold depends on your age: if you're 30 or older, you need to earn at least €5,942 per month excluding holiday allowance (about €71,304 per year). Under 30, the threshold drops to €4,357 per month (€52,284 per year). Recent graduates from Dutch or top-200 universities benefit from an even lower reduced threshold.

The biggest hidden benefit is the 30% tax ruling. If you qualify, roughly 30% of your gross salary becomes tax-free for up to 5 years (capped at €262,000 from 2026). On a €75,000 salary, this means you could save €7,000-10,000 per year in taxes. Combined with the Netherlands' central European location and English-friendly work culture, this makes the Kennismigrant one of the most financially attractive work visas in Europe.

visaEditorial.about

The Highly Skilled Migrant (kennismigrant) permit is the Netherlands' principal route for non-EU professionals taking up qualified employment with a Dutch employer. Its defining characteristic is the recognised-sponsor system: the permit can only be applied for by an employer that the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) has formally registered as a recognised sponsor (erkend referent). Companies on this register handle the application directly with the IND, which makes the process notably fast and streamlined.

Unlike points-based or labour-market-tested routes, the Highly Skilled Migrant permit is driven primarily by salary. There is no formal labour-market test and no degree requirement - instead the applicant must earn at least the IND salary threshold for their age bracket, which is updated each year and set lower for workers under 30 and lower still for recent graduates transitioning from the orientation year.

The permit combines a residence permit with work authorisation, supports family reunification with spousal work rights, and pairs well with the Netherlands' attractive 30% ruling tax facility. It is one of Europe's most efficient skilled-migration routes.

visaEditorial.eligibility

You must have an employment contract with a Dutch employer that holds IND recognised-sponsor status - this is the central requirement, and you cannot use the route with a non-recognised employer. Your gross salary must meet or exceed the IND Highly Skilled Migrant threshold for your age group: a higher figure for those aged 30 and over, a reduced figure for those under 30, and a further reduced figure for recent graduates moving directly from an orientation year or Dutch study. The 2026 thresholds are indexed annually, so always confirm the current amounts. There is no formal qualification or degree requirement and no labour-market test. You need a valid passport, and your employer must offer a genuine, market-conform position. Health insurance must be arranged after arrival.

visaEditorial.applicationProcess

Step one: secure a job offer from a Dutch employer that holds IND recognised-sponsor status - confirm the company appears on the IND public register. Step two: the employer, as recognised sponsor, files the combined application for the residence permit and, where needed, the entry visa (MVV) directly with the IND on your behalf. Step three: provide your employer with the supporting documents - passport copy, birth certificate where required, and an antecedents declaration. Step four: the IND assesses the application, focusing on whether your salary meets the threshold. Step five: once approved, if you need an MVV you collect it at the Dutch embassy or consulate in your country of residence and travel to the Netherlands. Step six: register with your municipality to obtain a citizen service number (BSN) and collect your residence permit card at an IND desk. Step seven: arrange Dutch health insurance and, with your employer, apply for the 30% ruling if eligible. Family members can be included in the application or apply for reunification in parallel.

visaEditorial.costs

The IND application fee for a Highly Skilled Migrant residence permit is in the region of €380–€420, updated annually, and is frequently paid by the employer as part of the relocation package. Family members each carry their own IND fee. Add costs for document legalisation or apostille, certified translations of civil-status documents, and biometric photos. Dutch health insurance is mandatory after arrival, typically €120–€160 per month. Municipal registration is free. Overall personal out-of-pocket costs are modest where the employer covers the IND fee, often under €500 excluding insurance.

visaEditorial.processing

The recognised-sponsor system makes this one of the fastest skilled routes in Europe. The IND has a legal decision period of up to 90 days for Highly Skilled Migrant applications, but recognised sponsors frequently receive decisions within two to four weeks. If an MVV entry visa is needed, collecting it at the embassy adds one to two weeks. Municipal registration and residence-card collection after arrival are usually completed within a couple of weeks.

visaEditorial.afterArrival

After arrival you register with your municipality for a BSN, collect your residence permit card and arrange Dutch health insurance. The permit ties you to highly skilled work; if you change employer, the new company must also be a recognised sponsor and you must continue to meet the salary threshold. Family members receive residence permits with full, unrestricted access to the Dutch labour market. Many Highly Skilled Migrants benefit from the 30% ruling, a tax facility that exempts a portion of salary from income tax for eligible incoming workers. After five years of continuous legal residence you can apply for permanent residence or EU long-term residence, and Dutch citizenship is generally available after five years - though the Netherlands restricts dual nationality, so naturalisation may require renouncing your original citizenship.

💡 visaEditorial.proTip Confirm your prospective employer is on the IND recognised-sponsor register before you sign anything - without that status this route is simply unavailable, and discovering it late can cost you the job and a much slower alternative process.
