Remote Work Visa
Digital Nomad visa - United Arab Emirates

The UAE Remote Work Visa (also known as the Virtual Working Program) allows professionals employed by companies outside the UAE to live in the UAE for one year while continuing to work remotely for their foreign employer. Launched in 2020, it positions the UAE as a hub for digital nomads and remote workers who want to enjoy the UAE's tax-free environment, infrastructure, and lifestyle.
The key financial requirement is a minimum monthly income of USD 3,500 (or equivalent), verified through employment contracts and bank statements. You must have valid health insurance coverage in the UAE โ either international coverage or a locally purchased policy. The visa costs approximately AED 611 plus additional processing fees. It is valid for one year and can be renewed.

About the Remote Work Visa
The UAE Remote Work Visa - the country's digital-nomad permit, often associated with the Dubai Virtual Working Programme - lets you live in the UAE for one year while working for an employer or clients based outside the country. Launched in 2021, it was one of the Gulf's first dedicated nomad schemes and remains popular with salaried remote employees, freelancers and company owners whose income originates abroad.
What sets it apart from every other UAE residence route is that it does not require a UAE sponsor or a local job. You are admitted on the strength of foreign earnings. The visa grants self-sponsored residence, lets you obtain an Emirates ID, open a bank account, enrol children in school and access UAE healthcare and telecom services on the same footing as other residents. It is renewable annually as long as you continue to meet the income and employment conditions. For globally mobile professionals it offers the lifestyle and connectivity of Dubai or Abu Dhabi without entanglement in the kafala employment system - and, like all UAE residence, with no personal income tax on those foreign earnings.
Eligibility and requirements
You must work remotely for an entity or clients outside the UAE. Salaried applicants need proof of employment with a current contract valid for at least one year and a minimum monthly income of USD 3,500, supported by the last three months of payslips and bank statements. Company owners must show ownership for at least one year and equivalent monthly income from the business.
All applicants need a passport valid for at least six months and valid health insurance with UAE coverage for the visa term. You will pass a medical fitness test in-country. The visa is not for taking up local UAE employment - your income must demonstrably come from outside the country. Dependents can be added if you meet the standard sponsorship requirements.
Application process step by step
Step 1: Confirm you qualify as a remote salaried employee or a foreign company owner, and assemble proof of income meeting the USD 3,500 monthly threshold.
Step 2: Gather your passport copy, employment contract or company ownership documents, three months of payslips and bank statements, and a UAE-valid health insurance policy.
Step 3: Apply online through the official Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICP) portal or the dedicated virtual-working programme channel.
Step 4: Pay the processing fee and submit your documents for review.
Step 5: Once the entry permit is approved, travel to the UAE if you are not already there.
Step 6: Complete the medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics, after which your one-year residence is issued. The process typically takes two to four weeks. Applying from inside the UAE on a tourist visa is possible through a status adjustment, but confirming current ICP rules first avoids an unnecessary exit.
Costs and fees
The remote-work visa fee is roughly USD 287 plus a processing and medical insurance verification charge, with the Emirates ID adding around AED 370. Mandatory UAE health insurance is the largest variable cost - expect USD 300-1,000 per year depending on age and coverage level. The medical fitness test is about AED 320-700. If you apply from inside the UAE, a status-change fee of around AED 500-650 applies. Renewing annually repeats the visa and medical costs. Sponsoring dependents adds separate per-person fees.
Processing time and what to expect
Remote-work visa applications are usually processed within two to four weeks once a complete file is submitted to the ICP. The entry-permit approval is the main milestone; after that, the medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics add roughly one to two weeks. Applications stall most often over insufficient income evidence, payslips or bank statements that do not cover the required three months, or health insurance that lacks valid UAE coverage. Renewals are generally faster than first-time applications.
After you arrive - rights and restrictions
After entering the UAE, complete your medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics promptly - the ID unlocks banking, leasing, school enrolment and a full telecom plan. Confirm your health insurance is active and UAE-valid, as proof is required at issuance and renewal.
Your residence is self-sponsored, so you are free to keep working for your foreign employer or clients without a local sponsor. You may rent property, register children in UAE schools and use public and private healthcare. Be mindful that the visa does not authorise local UAE employment; taking a UAE job means switching to an employment or Green Visa. Track your renewal date and keep income evidence current, since the USD 3,500 threshold is re-tested each year. Prolonged absence can affect residence, so monitor your time outside the country.
๐ก Pro tip: Keep a clean, continuous three-month record of payslips and matching bank deposits before applying. Reviewers cross-check that declared income actually lands in your account - gaps or mismatches are the fastest way to a rejection.
