The Filipino nurse advantage
The Philippines is the world's number one exporter of nurses. More than 200,000 Filipino nurses work overseas in 40+ countries, and the global nursing shortage means every major destination is actively recruiting. As a Filipino-trained nurse, you are in demand everywhere - the question is not whether you can work abroad, but which country gives you the best package.
- The 4-year BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) program matches international standards.
- English-language education means no language barrier in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand.
- Filipino nurses are recognised globally for clinical competence and cultural adaptability.
- Bilateral labour agreements give Filipinos structured, government-protected pathways into Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

🇺🇸 US - NCLEX pathway (highest salary)
The United States pays Filipino nurses the most - $65,000 to $95,000 a year - and the EB-3 route leads to a green card. It is also the hardest and slowest pathway. Here is the step-by-step.
- CGFNS Certification Program (CCP): credential evaluation plus a qualifying exam. Processing 4-8 months, cost about $445.
- NCLEX-RN registration: apply to your target state's Board of Nursing, get your ATT (Authorization to Test). Cost about $200 plus a state fee of $75-300.
- Take NCLEX-RN at Pearson VUE Manila or Cebu - a computer-adaptive test of 75-145 questions.
- VisaScreen Certificate from ICHP: required for any healthcare worker entering the US. Processing 2-4 months, cost about $540.
- Employer sponsorship: a US hospital files an I-140 EB-3 immigrant petition. Processing 12-24 months (retrogression possible).
- Immigrant visa interview at the US Embassy in Manila, then deployment as a permanent resident.
Review centres in Manila
- Achievers (Makati, Cebu) - among the highest reported pass rates.
- Review Masters (Manila).
- Nursing.ph online review.
- Cost: ₱15,000-50,000 depending on the program.

🇬🇧 UK - fastest Western pathway
The UK is the number two destination for Filipino nurses and the fastest way into a Western healthcare system. You can pass the CBT in Manila and be working in an NHS hospital within 3-6 months.
NMC registration
- CBT (Computer-Based Test): available in Manila at Pearson VUE. Cost £83 (~₱6K), pass rate around 70%. Two parts - nursing knowledge and clinical decision-making.
- OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination): must be taken in the UK. Six stations. Most employers pay flights, accommodation, and the exam fee. Pass rate around 85%.
- NMC registration: once CBT and OSCE are passed you become a registered UK nurse. Cost £120 (~₱8.5K).
Health & Care visa
- Visa fee £284 (~₱20K), versus £1,400 for a standard Skilled Worker visa.
- NO Immigration Health Surcharge - this exemption saves ₱220K+ over five years.
- Minimum salary £29,000 (nurses qualify for the Immigration Salary List discount).
- Dependants: spouse and children can come with you.
- ILR (settlement) after 5 years - note the UK White Paper proposes extending this to 10 years.
🇨🇦 Canada - permanent residency as a nurse
Canada offers Filipino nurses direct permanent residency. There are two main pathways.
- Express Entry healthcare draws: the CRS cutoff for healthcare draws is around 467, well below the general 515. A Filipino nurse with a BSN, IELTS 8.0, and 3 years of experience scores roughly 420-450. A provincial nomination adds 600 points.
- Provincial licensing plus work permit: complete an NNAS assessment and province-specific licensing, work on an LMIA-backed permit, then apply through the Canadian Experience Class.
Full detail - caregiver PR, proof of funds from OFW remittances, PNPs - is in the Canada PR from Philippines guide.
🇦🇺 Australia - direct PR for nurses
- ANMAC skills assessment (qualification verification).
- AHPRA registration - you may need a Modified OSCE or a bridging program.
- Subclass 189 visa: direct permanent residency for Registered Nurses on the skilled occupation list.
- Alternatively, a 482 employer-sponsored visa leading to PR.
🇸🇦🇦🇪 Gulf states - fastest deployment
Saudi Arabia (Prometric + SCFHS)
- Prometric exam available in Manila; SCFHS registration after passing.
- Deployment in 1-2 months through a DMW-accredited agency.
- Salary SAR8-12K/month, tax-free. Contracts are typically 2 years.
UAE (DHA / HAAD / MOH)
- DHA for Dubai, HAAD for Abu Dhabi, MOH for the other emirates - exams available in Manila.
- Salary AED8-14K/month, tax-free. Free accommodation and transport are typical.
🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇩🇪 Germany & 🇯🇵 Japan
Ireland - the emerging option
- NMBI (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland) registration with an Aptitude Test, similar to the UK OSCE.
- Critical Skills work permit leading to Stamp 4 (long-term residency) in 21 months.
- English-speaking, EU access, growing Filipino community. Salary €33-45K.
Germany - the Anerkennung pathway
- Recognition (Anerkennung) of your Philippine nursing qualification - you may need a knowledge exam (Kenntnisprüfung) or an adaptation period.
- B1/B2 German is required. Once recognised, you earn the same salary as German nurses (€3-4K/month) and reach PR in 21 months.
- Start German FIRST - the language is the bottleneck, not the qualification.
Japan - the hardest exam
- The Japanese National Nursing Exam is sat in Japanese; the pass rate for foreign nurses is under 15%.
- You need JLPT N1 (fluent Japanese). The EPA program provides training and language support.
- Only pursue Japan nursing if you are willing to invest 2-3 years in the language. See the Japan work visa guide for the SSW alternative.
