USCIS Case Status - What Each Message Means

Hızlı yanıt

USCIS case status messages are short, jargony, and often unclear. The most common are 'Case Was Received' (USCIS opened the envelope), 'Case Is Being Actively Reviewed' (an officer has it), 'Request for Evidence Was Sent' (you must respond with extra docs), 'Case Was Approved' (you won), and 'Card Was Mailed' (the physical green card or EAD is in the post). Check status at egov.uscis.gov/casestatus with your 13-character receipt number.

How to check your case

Open egov.uscis.gov/casestatus in any browser. Enter your 13-character receipt number with no spaces or dashes. Click 'Check Status'. No login is required. You can also see the same information in your myUSCIS dashboard if you have an account.

When the status has not updated in months

USCIS only updates the status when an officer takes a specific action. Long silences are normal - many I-485 cases sit in 'Case Is Being Actively Reviewed' for 6-12 months. If processing has exceeded the USCIS-published time for your form type, you can submit an online service request or call the USCIS Contact Center.

Why does my status say 'Case Received' but I never got an I-797?

Mail can take 2-4 weeks. Verify your address on myUSCIS and call the USCIS Contact Center if more than 30 days have passed.

What is the difference between RFE and NOID?

RFE = Request for Evidence (you may be missing docs). NOID = Notice of Intent to Deny (USCIS plans to deny unless you persuade them). NOID is more serious.

What does 'Case Approved' mean for I-485?

You are a permanent resident from the approval date. The physical green card follows by mail within 2-4 weeks.

Can I expedite my case if the status is stuck?

Only for narrow reasons - severe financial loss, urgent humanitarian, US government interest, error, or compelling situations. Submit an expedite request via the Contact Center.
