Why Canada is rising fast for Ghanaians

Canada is the fastest-growing destination for Ghanaians. College study permits grew more than 440% between 2022 and 2023, and the Ghanaian community in Toronto, Calgary, and Winnipeg is expanding quickly.

  • Express Entry needs no employer and grants permanent residency in about 6 months.
  • Ghana's English-medium education gives a natural IELTS advantage worth real CRS points.
  • No per-country cap - unlike the frozen US system.
  • A French shortcut can cut the CRS bar from 515 to around 400.

The French shortcut

Alliance Française Accra in Cantonments runs French courses. Reaching DELF B2 in about 6 months qualifies you for Francophone Express Entry draws, where cutoffs run near 400 instead of 515 - a 50-100 point advantage. See French for Canada PR.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points - effectively a guaranteed invitation. The best provinces for Ghanaians:

  • Ontario - the largest Ghanaian community, strong tech and healthcare demand.
  • Alberta - a fast-growing Ghanaian community in Calgary.
  • Manitoba - lower CRS thresholds and a settled West African community.
  • Atlantic provinces - the Atlantic Immigration Program targets healthcare and trades.

Study → PGWP → PR pathway

With college study permits up 440%, study-then-stay is now a mainstream route. A 2-year diploma leads to a 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), and Canadian work experience then makes you highly competitive through the Canadian Experience Class. Note that the Student Direct Stream is not currently available for Ghana, so prepare standard study-permit documents thoroughly.

Full detail is in the study abroad from Ghana guide.

IRCC approval rates for Ghanaians

IRCC approves roughly 32-46% of Ghanaian post-secondary study permit applications. The rate is improving, and applicants who prepare strong, consistent financial documents and a clear study plan do far better than the headline number suggests.

Proof of funds in Cedis

Express Entry requires settlement funds in your own name - a single applicant needs about C$14,690 (roughly GHS 220,000). Use a GCB or Ecobank account, ideally a domiciliary (foreign-currency) account, and build a consistent 6-month history before applying.

If your savings sit in a relative's account, transfer them to your personal account at least 6 months before applying. Funds that are not in your name do not count.

IELTS strategy

Take IELTS General Training (for Express Entry) at the British Council Accra. Ghanaians typically score 6.5-7.5 thanks to English-medium schooling. Target L8.0 / R7.0 / W7.0 / S7.0 to reach CLB 9, which maximises both your core language points and skill-transferability points.

WES evaluation for Ghanaian degrees

Express Entry requires an Educational Credential Assessment. WES (World Education Services) evaluates degrees from KNUST, the University of Ghana (Legon), the University of Cape Coast, Ashesi University, and other accredited institutions. Request your transcripts and degree certificate be sent directly by the university - allow 6-12 weeks.

Month-by-month action plan

  1. Months 1-2: take IELTS at the British Council Accra and start your WES evaluation.
  2. Months 2-4: gather documents, build proof of funds, optionally start French at Alliance Française.
  3. Month 4: create your Express Entry profile or apply to a PNP.
  4. Months 5-10: receive an invitation, submit your PR application, complete medical and police checks.
  5. Months 10-12: PR confirmed - plan your move.
