UK visa approval rates for Ghanaians - the data

The UK is by far the most popular destination for Ghanaians, with more than 60,000 applications a year. But every single visa category sits below the global average approval rate. Here is the data, based on UK Home Office statistics:

CategoryApplicationsGrantedGrant RateGlobal Avg
Visitor~48,000~27,40057%89%
Student~5,800~4,90085%95%
Skilled Worker~5,500~3,60065%92%
Health & Care~2,200~1,650~75%95%
Family~2,500~1,95078%85%

Ghana ranks around 10th globally for student visa applications. The pattern is clear: Ghanaian applications face heavier scrutiny, so preparation matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Visitor visa - why 43% get refused

The five most common reasons Ghanaian visitor visa applications are refused:

  1. Insufficient funds or inconsistent bank statements (~35% of refusals) - sudden large deposits before applying are an automatic red flag.
  2. Weak ties to Ghana (~25%) - no property, no stable job, nothing showing you will return.
  3. Purpose of visit not credible (~15%) - a vague "tourism" reason instead of a specific, dated plan.
  4. Previous visa refusal (~10%) - a prior refusal not properly addressed in the new application.
  5. Fraudulent or inconsistent documents (~15%) - answers that do not match across the form and supporting papers.
To fix the funds problem: show a GCB or Ecobank account with 6+ months of consistent salary deposits. To fix ties: include your Registrar General business registration, SSNIT contribution history, property documents, and a detailed itinerary. Consistency between your application form and documents is non-negotiable.

Skilled Worker visa - step by step

  1. Secure a job offer from a UK employer on the licensed sponsor register and receive a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).
  2. Complete the online application and pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
  3. Book a biometrics appointment at VFS Global Accra.
  4. Take the mandatory TB test at an approved Accra clinic.
  5. Receive a decision - Skilled Worker decisions typically arrive within 3 weeks.

The general salary threshold is around £41,700, with lower rates for shortage occupations and new entrants. Check your eligibility with the UK Skilled Worker checker and the salary threshold checker.

Health & Care Worker - for Ghanaian nurses

  • The NMC CBT exam can be taken at the British Council in Accra; the OSCE is taken in the UK.
  • Health & Care visa fee: about GHS 2,200, versus GHS 12,000+ for a standard Skilled Worker visa.
  • NO Immigration Health Surcharge - this exemption saves around GHS 67,000 over a five-year visa.
  • Minimum salary £29,000; nurses qualify for the Immigration Salary List discount.
The Health & Care visa is roughly 4x cheaper than a Skilled Worker visa. If you are a nurse, doctor, or carer, this is the only route that makes financial sense. See visa sponsorship jobs for nurses.

Student visa - 85% approval (your best odds)

The Student visa has the highest approval rate of any UK category for Ghanaians at around 85%. You need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed university, IELTS Academic (typically 6.0-7.0), and proof of funds of £12,006 for London or £9,207 elsewhere.

After graduating you can switch to the 2-year Graduate visa, which needs no sponsor and lets you move into a Skilled Worker role. See the UK Immigration White Paper analysis for how the rules are changing.

VFS Global Accra - the appointment guide

UK visa biometrics for Ghanaians are submitted at VFS Global Accra, in the Villagio Vista Shopping Mall, Airport Residential Area, on Nii Nortei Nyanchi Street.

  • Book your appointment online 2-3 weeks ahead - slots fill fast, especially October-December.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early; bring originals and photocopies of every document.
  • Phones and electronic devices are not allowed inside the centre.
  • Priority and super-priority services are available for an extra fee if you need a faster decision.

TB test - where and how in Accra

A tuberculosis test is mandatory for all Ghanaians applying for a UK visa of 6 months or longer. It must be done at a UK-approved clinic in Accra (such as the IOM clinic), costs around GHS 1,400, and the certificate is valid for 6 months - so time it carefully relative to your application date.

UK visa refusal - what to do next

A refusal is not the end. You can reapply once you have fixed the specific issue, and for some decisions an administrative review (£80) is available where you believe the officer made an error.

Do NOT resubmit the same application. The refusal letter states exactly what was wrong - address that specific point with new evidence, then reapply. Resubmitting unchanged almost always leads to a second refusal.

Bank statement strategy for Ghanaians

  • Show 6+ months of consistent deposits - your salary landing in the account on a regular pattern.
  • Avoid sudden large deposits; officers recognise "padding" and "round-tripping" (borrowing money, depositing it, then returning it after the visa).
  • GCB Bank, Ecobank, Stanbic, and CalBank statements are the most recognised by Accra embassy officers.
  • Fixed deposits are acceptable but need a supporting bank letter.
  • Mobile money (MTN MoMo) can supplement a bank statement but never replace it as primary proof.
  • If your salary is paid in cash, start depositing it into your bank account every month at least 6 months before you apply.

White Paper 2026 - impact on Ghanaians

The UK Immigration White Paper proposes extending settlement (ILR) from 5 to 10 years and raising salary thresholds. The Health & Care visa dependant restriction is already in effect. If the UK is your plan, applying sooner protects you from the tougher rules. Read the full White Paper analysis.
