Why move to Canada?
Canada is the only G7 country offering direct permanent residency via a points test with no employer, no salary floor, and no lottery. Express Entry processed 80% of applications in under 6 months in 2025. Universal healthcare, free K-12 education for permanent residents, and citizenship eligibility at 3 years.
2026 immigration targets: 380,000 PR admissions per year (down from 485,000 in 2024 but still the highest per-capita in the G7). Healthcare workers, French speakers, and STEM professionals are getting the fastest pathways.

The fastest pathway: Express Entry
Express Entry is the world's most efficient PR system. There is no employer, no quota lottery, and no salary minimum. You just need enough points on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to be picked in a regular draw.
2026 cutoff scores by category:
- General draws: 515-540 CRS (highly competitive - most candidates need a job offer or PNP nomination).
- French language proficiency: ~395 CRS (the easiest direct path in 2026; B2 French alone gets most applicants in).
- Healthcare occupations: 467 CRS (nurses, doctors, paramedics, PSWs).
- STEM occupations: 491 CRS (software engineers, data scientists, electrical engineers).
- Trades: 433 CRS (welders, plumbers, electricians).
- Take IELTS/CELPIP for English (and TEF/TCF for French if applicable).
- Get your degree assessed (ECA) through WES or ICAS - about C$200 and 3-4 weeks.
- Create your Express Entry profile on the IRCC portal; you get a CRS score immediately.
- Wait for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in a category-based draw.
- Submit your Application for Permanent Residence within 60 days.
- PR confirmation in 6 months on average; land any time within 1 year of approval.
Moving without a job offer
Express Entry is built around the no-employer pathway. The CRS gives bonus points for a job offer, but they are typically not required if you have:
- A Master's or PhD (about 30 extra points).
- B2+ French (50 points for French alone, 75 if combined with English).
- Strong English (CLB 9+ adds about 24 points).
- Canadian work experience or a sibling already in Canada.
- A Provincial Nomination - adds 600 CRS points, virtually guarantees an ITA.

Cost of moving
| Item | Cost (CAD) |
|---|---|
| Express Entry government fees (single) | C$1,525 |
| Spouse fee | C$1,525 |
| Child fee (each) | C$260 |
| Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) | C$200-250 |
| IELTS or CELPIP | C$300-400 |
| Police certificates | C$50-150 |
| Medical exam | C$200-450 |
| Proof of funds (FSW) | C$14,690 (single) / C$18,288 (couple) |
| Flight (one-way) | C$1,000-2,500 |
| First month rent + deposit (Toronto) | C$5,000-7,000 |
| Estimated cash needed (single, first 6 months) | C$25,000-30,000 |
Proof of funds is the biggest upfront barrier; it must be liquid, in your name, with 6-month bank history. Smaller cities (Calgary, Halifax, Winnipeg) reduce settlement cost 40-50% vs Toronto.
Finding a job from abroad
Job offers are not required but help. Best Canadian platforms:
- Job Bank (jobbank.gc.ca) - government portal, LMIA-flagged listings.
- LinkedIn Canada - most multinational hiring runs here.
- Indeed.ca - broadest local coverage.
- Workopolis, Eluta - Canadian-specific job boards.
Healthcare, IT, construction, trucking, and accounting are 2026's strongest hiring sectors. See top Canadian sponsors and salary expectations.
Language requirements
English: IELTS General Training or CELPIP. Aim for CLB 9 across all bands (IELTS 8/7/7/7) for maximum points.
French: TEF Canada or TCF Canada. B2 (NCLC 7) unlocks 50 bonus points and category-based French draws. C1 (NCLC 9) gives 75 points combined with English.
French gives Canadian PR the lowest CRS cutoffs in 2026. Studying French for 6-9 months pre-application can drop your effective CRS requirement by 100+ points. See the French strategy guide.
Path to permanent residency
With Express Entry, PR is the visa - you become a permanent resident at landing. Citizenship eligibility is at 3 years of physical residence within any 5-year window (1,095 days).
- Day 0: Land in Canada as a permanent resident.
- Year 3: File citizenship application once you hit 1,095 days.
- Year 4: Citizenship oath ceremony; Canadian passport.
Dual citizenship is allowed. Canada does not tax outside-Canada income for non-residents.
Taxes and finances
Canadian income tax is federal plus provincial. Combined top marginal rate ranges 33-54% depending on province (Quebec highest, Alberta lowest).
Tax treaties with 90+ countries prevent double taxation. As a permanent resident, you pay tax on worldwide income from day 1 of tax residency.
Open a chequing account at RBC, TD, BMO, Scotiabank, or CIBC after landing. Newcomer packages waive fees for 1 year.
