What consulates actually want to see

An itinerary for visa purposes is not a tourist brochure or a wish list. It is a precise day-by-day schedule showing two things: (1) where you sleep every single night, and (2) how you move between locations. Consular officers do not care that you want to visit "Paris and Rome" - they want to see exactly where you sleep on each of the 14 nights.

Consulates use the itinerary to check three things. First, that it is geographically and temporally feasible - you cannot be in Paris on Tuesday night and Rome on Wednesday morning without a flight booked. Second, that you have accommodation for every single night (no gaps suggest unauthorised stays elsewhere). Third, that the trip matches the visa duration and main-destination claim on your application.

Flight itinerary without paying full price

Most applicants do not want to buy a non-refundable flight before they know whether the visa will be approved. Three legitimate routes exist:

  1. Refundable flight bookings - Most major airlines offer fully refundable fares at a 30–50% premium over restricted economy. Buy, print, then refund after visa approval. Most embassies accept this without question.
  2. Airline "hold" / fare-lock - Several carriers (American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Air India) let you hold a fare for 24–72 hours for free or for a small fee (typically USD 10–30). Print the hold confirmation; submit it; the hold lapses automatically if you do nothing.
  3. Booking-agency dummy ticket service - Specialist sites (Visa Reservation, Dummy Ticket 360, OneWayFly) issue real PNR-verifiable reservations for USD 10–25 that hold for 7–14 days. Many embassies accept these; some (Schengen consulates in Italy) explicitly do not.
Do NOT submit fake or fabricated flight tickets. Some consulates verify PNRs directly with airlines. A fake PNR is misrepresentation, which leads to immediate refusal and often a ban under section 6A of the EU Visa Code (Schengen) or equivalent provisions elsewhere.

Recommended approach: book actual refundable flights with a real airline. The 30–50% premium on the fare is recoverable on cancellation; the legitimacy is unimpeachable.

Hotel bookings - same refundable approach

Hotel bookings follow the same logic. Use Booking.com or Hotels.com to book accommodation with "free cancellation up to [N] days before check-in". Print the confirmation; submit it; cancel after visa approval if your plans change.

  • Booking.com is the most-accepted platform for visa purposes - every Schengen, UK, and Canadian consulate accepts a Booking.com confirmation.
  • Pay attention to the cancellation deadline (usually 24–72 hours before check-in). If the deadline passes before the embassy decides, you become liable for the full booking.
  • Some consulates (Italy, Greece) prefer to see a paid booking, not a held one. Read the embassy checklist carefully - "confirmed accommodation" can mean either.
  • For long itineraries (>7 nights), consider mixing one or two pre-paid "anchor" hotels with free-cancellation bookings for the rest. Anchor hotels signal commitment.
