Global Talent Stream
Skilled Worker visa - Canada

The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is Canada's fast-track work permit program designed to help Canadian employers hire highly skilled foreign workers, particularly in technology. Its hallmark feature is a two-week processing target from the date of a complete application, making it one of the fastest employer-sponsored pathways in the world.
GTS operates in two categories. Category A is for unique talent referred by a designated partner organization — these are individuals with exceptional skills that no Canadian can provide. Category B covers specific in-demand occupations on the Global Talent Occupations List, which includes roles like software engineers, data scientists, and digital media designers. The employer pays a CAD 1,000 LMIA processing fee (instead of the standard CAD 1,000, but under simplified requirements) and must commit to a Labour Market Benefits Plan showing how the hire will create jobs or invest in skills training for Canadians.

visaEditorial.about
The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is Canada's fast-track work-permit route for highly skilled talent - most prominently in technology. It is part of Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program but is built for speed: GTS work permit applications are typically processed in about two weeks, dramatically faster than standard routes.
The GTS is employer-driven. A Canadian employer obtains a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) through the GTS, and the worker then applies for a work permit under expedited processing. It is divided into Category A, for innovative firms referred by a designated partner that need unique specialised talent, and Category B, for employers hiring in-demand occupations on the Global Talent Occupations List, which includes many software, data, engineering and digital-media roles.
In 2026, with the United States H-1B disrupted by the $100,000 supplemental fee and the wage-weighted lottery, the GTS has become a leading alternative for global tech talent and for the companies recruiting them. It is a temporary route, but one that pairs naturally with Express Entry for permanent residence.
visaEditorial.eligibility
The GTS is assessed at two levels. The employer must qualify: under Category A it must be referred by one of Canada's designated referral partners and seeking unique, specialised talent; under Category B it must be hiring for an occupation on the Global Talent Occupations List. In both cases the employer commits to a Labour Market Benefits Plan with binding obligations such as job creation or skills transfer.
As the worker, you must be qualified for the specific role - meeting the experience, education and any licensing requirements of the position - and the job must be genuine and meet prevailing wage standards. The role generally needs to be high-skilled. There is no points test and no lottery; eligibility flows from a valid employer LMIA and your fit for the position.
visaEditorial.applicationProcess
The process starts with the employer. For Category A, the employer must be referred by a designated referral partner; for Category B, the role must be on the Global Talent Occupations List. The employer then applies to Employment and Social Development Canada for a Labour Market Impact Assessment under the GTS and develops a Labour Market Benefits Plan.
Once the LMIA is issued, you apply for a work permit. Eligible applications are processed under the two-week service standard. You submit the application online with your job offer, the LMIA number, proof of qualifications, and biometrics, and complete a medical examination if required.
Work permits can often be issued from within Canada or on arrival, depending on your situation, and eligible spouses can apply for an open work permit. Because the timeline is so compressed, having your passport, credentials and biometrics ready in advance is what allows the GTS to deliver on its two-week promise.
visaEditorial.costs
The employer pays the LMIA processing fee of CAD 1,000 for the GTS position. As the worker, you pay the work permit processing fee (CAD 155) and, if applicable, the open work permit holder fee, plus biometrics at CAD 85 per person. A medical examination, where required, costs CAD 200-450. Spousal open work permits carry their own work permit fee. Hidden costs are modest compared with permanent-residence routes, but relocation expenses and the cost of any required credential recognition or licensing should be budgeted. Many employers reimburse worker fees.
visaEditorial.processing
The headline feature is speed: complete work permit applications under the Global Talent Stream are processed against a two-week service standard once the employer's LMIA is in place. The LMIA itself, including development of the Labour Market Benefits Plan, takes additional time on the employer side. After approval, you receive a work permit allowing you to begin the specified job. Ensuring biometrics and medicals are done promptly keeps you within the two-week window.
visaEditorial.afterArrival
A GTS work permit is employer-specific - it ties you to the job and employer named in the LMIA - and is issued for the duration of the offer, commonly up to three years. Eligible spouses can obtain an open work permit and work for any employer, and children can attend school.
The GTS itself is a temporary program with no direct PR component, but it is a powerful springboard. The Canadian skilled work experience you gain can make you eligible for the Canadian Experience Class or boost your CRS score in the Express Entry pool, and a provincial nomination can follow. Many GTS arrivals transition to permanent residence within their first work permit. Plan the PR pathway early so your work experience counts when you become eligible.
💡 visaEditorial.proTip Have your passport valid, biometrics booked and credential documents ready before the employer's LMIA is issued. The GTS two-week service standard only delivers if your work permit application is complete on day one - incomplete files lose the speed advantage.
