Frequently asked questions
Why is the F-1 refusal rate so high?
Refusal rate averages 30% globally. The main reason is officers not convinced the student will return home after graduation (INA 214(b)). Strong ties evidence is essential.
Can I apply for F-1 immediately after a denial?
Yes. There is no waiting period. However, reapplying with the same evidence usually fails. Strengthen your case: more funding proof, stronger ties, or address the specific concern raised.
Do I need to pay the SEVIS fee before the interview?
Yes. The I-901 SEVIS fee ($350) must be paid before scheduling your interview. Bring the receipt.
Should I mention plans to work in the US after F-1?
Be careful. OPT is part of F-1 so mentioning it is fine. But avoid statements suggesting permanent US intent (e.g., 'I want to get H-1B and stay'). Focus on academic intent and home-country career.
Will the End H-1B Visa Abuse Act affect my F-1 status?
No. The bill has not passed. OPT is still active. F-1 students with valid status continue normally regardless of proposed legislation.
Can my parents come to my F-1 interview?
No. F-1 interviews are individual. Parents can be in the embassy waiting area but cannot accompany you to the window.
