World Cup 2026 visa deep dives
Kickoff is 11 June 2026 and consular wait times are climbing, so start now. These dedicated guides go deeper than the country overviews below:
Quick check - do you need a visa
FOR THE UNITED STATES:
- Visa Waiver Program (VWP) country: ESTA only ($21, online)
- VWP includes UK, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Portugal, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, Chile, plus 17 more (40 total)
- NOT a VWP country: B-1/B-2 tourist visa required (embassy interview)
- B-1/B-2 needed for India, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa (most), Brazil, China, Mexico, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon, and most of Africa, Asia, and South America
- Canadian citizens: no visa needed - passport only
FOR CANADA:
- eTA-eligible: eTA only (C$7, online, minutes)
- eTA countries match US VWP plus Mexico, Brazil, and others
- NOT eTA-eligible: Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) required
- TRV needed for India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ghana, Cameroon, Philippines, China, and most African and South Asian countries
FOR MEXICO:
- Most nationalities: visa-free or FMM tourist card on arrival
- Visa-exempt if you hold valid multi-entry visa for USA, Canada, Japan, UK, or Schengen
- No qualifying visa: Mexican tourist visa required (mainly some African, Asian, and Middle Eastern nationalities)
United States entry requirements
OPTION 1 - ESTA (Visa Waiver Program countries). Cost: $21. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov at least 72 hours before travel. Valid 2 years or until passport expires. Stay up to 90 days. Requires valid passport, no prior visa denials, no recent visits to certain countries (Iran, Iraq, Syria, etc.). Usually approved in minutes, sometimes hours.
OPTION 2 - B-1/B-2 Tourist Visa. $185 application fee. Apply at the nearest US embassy or consulate. Process: complete DS-160 online, pay fee, schedule interview. Processing varies WIDELY by embassy from 1 week to 6+ months. Required documents: passport, photo, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt, proof of ties to home country, bank statements, match tickets, hotel reservations, return flight. Be honest about World Cup purpose at interview. Visa typically valid 5-10 years with stays limited to 6 months per visit.
OPTION 3 - FIFA PASS (NEW for 2026). The US State Department priority interview system for World Cup fans. Link your match tickets to your visa application for priority scheduling. NOT a separate visa - it speeds up B-1/B-2 interview appointment. Mention 'FIFA World Cup 2026' in your DS-160 travel purpose.
CRITICAL NOTE. Two separate US policies get confused. The 75-country immigrant-visa freeze applies ONLY to people immigrating to live in the US permanently; it does NOT affect World Cup tourists, B1/B2 visitors, or ESTA travellers. The travel ban (Presidential Proclamation 10998) is separate and DOES affect fans from fully-banned countries such as Iran and Haiti and partially-restricted countries such as Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal; a FIFA PASS does not bypass it. See The Great Visa Freeze Report 2026 for full details.

Mexico entry requirements
OPTION 1 - Visa-free entry (most countries). Many nationalities enter visa-free for tourism up to 180 days. The FMM tourist card is filled online or on arrival - free by air, around $30 by land. Passport validity of 6 months recommended.
OPTION 2 - Visa exemption via another visa. If you hold a valid MULTIPLE-ENTRY visa or permanent residence from USA, Canada, Japan, UK, or any Schengen Area country, you do NOT need a separate Mexican visa. Stay up to 180 days. This is a major shortcut for fans who already secured a US or Canada visa.
OPTION 3 - Mexican tourist visa (for remaining nationalities). Apply at the nearest Mexican consulate. Cost varies by country (~$40-60). Processing 2-4 weeks. Required: passport, proof of funds, hotel reservation, match tickets.
Mexico has the most flexible entry of the three host countries. If you got a US B-1/B-2 visa, you automatically qualify for visa-free entry to Mexico. Apply for the US visa first.
Traveling between countries during the tournament
There is NO unified World Cup visa. You need separate authorization for EACH country you enter.
SCENARIO 1 - Group stage in Mexico, knockouts in USA. Need Mexican FMM/visa plus US ESTA or B-1/B-2. Fly Mexico City to Houston, Dallas, or Miami (1-3 hours). Full US immigration at arrival airport.
SCENARIO 2 - Group stage in Canada, knockouts in USA. Need Canada eTA/TRV plus US ESTA or B-1/B-2. Fly Toronto/Vancouver to US cities. Land border possible but expect 2-4 hour waits during tournament.
SCENARIO 3 - Matches in all three countries. Need all three authorizations (ESTA/B-1 + eTA/TRV + FMM). Strategy: get the US visa first (hardest), then Mexico is free, then Canada eTA (easiest). Book inter-country flights early - World Cup routes sell out.
IMPORTANT TRANSIT RULES:
- Canada: even TRANSITING through a Canadian airport requires eTA or TRV
- USA: transit visa (C-1) or ESTA required for connections
- Mexico: no transit visa needed for international connections
- If flying from Mexico to Canada with a US connection, you need ESTA/visa for the US layover even if you don't leave the airport
Cross-border scenarios:
| Route | Distance | Transport | Documents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mexico City → Houston | 1,500 km | 2.5h flight | US ESTA/B-1 |
| Mexico City → Dallas | 1,600 km | 2.5h flight | US ESTA/B-1 |
| Toronto → New York | 550 km | 1.5h flight or 8h drive | US ESTA/B-1 |
| Vancouver → Seattle | 230 km | 1h flight or 3h drive | US ESTA/B-1 |
| Monterrey → Houston | 500 km | 1.5h flight or 5h drive | US ESTA/B-1 |
| Toronto → Vancouver | 3,400 km | 5h flight | Same Canada visa |

The FIFA PASS system explained
FIFA PASS was introduced by the US State Department specifically for World Cup 2026. It links your match tickets to your visa application and provides priority interview scheduling at US embassies. NOT a separate visa - it accelerates B-1/B-2 processing. Available for fans from countries requiring a US visa interview.
How to register:
- Purchase World Cup match tickets through FIFA
- Complete your DS-160 visa application
- Register on the FIFA PASS portal linking the ticket to your DS-160
- Receive your priority interview appointment
FIFA PASS does not guarantee visa approval - standard eligibility criteria still apply. Mention 'FIFA World Cup 2026' in your DS-160 travel purpose. For broader US processing context, see USCIS Processing Times 2026.
Documents checklist for match day

Common mistakes that get fans denied entry
- Expired ESTA - check expiry before travel (2-year validity)
- Wrong passport - ESTA and eTA are linked to a specific passport number
- Overstaying on a previous visit - flagged in CBP system
- Mentioning 'work' at the border - you are a TOURIST here for football
- Insufficient funds - have a bank statement showing your travel budget
- No return flight - always have a confirmed return booking
- Social media posts about wanting to 'stay' or 'find work' in the US (social media screening active since March 2026). See US Social Media Screening 2026
- Traveling from a travel-ban country - the travel ban (Proclamation 10998), not the immigrant-visa freeze, is what may restrict entry; the 75-country freeze applies only to immigrant visas and does not affect tourists. See the freeze report
- Not having match tickets - border officers may ask for proof of purpose
- Arriving without hotel reservation - always have accommodation confirmed

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for the 2026 World Cup?
It depends on your nationality and which host country you're visiting. Citizens of 40 countries can enter the US with just an ESTA ($21). Others need a B-1/B-2 visa. Canada requires eTA or TRV. Mexico is visa-free for most nationalities or if you hold a valid US, Canada, UK, Japan, or Schengen visa.
Is there a special World Cup visa for 2026?
No. There is no unified World Cup visa. Each host country (USA, Canada, Mexico) requires its own entry authorization. The US introduced FIFA PASS to speed up visa interviews for ticket holders, but it is not a separate visa.
What is FIFA PASS?
FIFA PASS is a US State Department system that links your World Cup match tickets to your visa application, providing priority interview scheduling at US embassies. It speeds up B-1/B-2 processing but does not guarantee approval.
Can I travel between USA, Canada, and Mexico during the World Cup?
Yes, but you need separate entry authorization for each country. Get your US visa first (hardest), then Mexico is often visa-free with a valid US visa, then apply for Canada eTA or TRV.
How much does it cost to attend the World Cup?
Budget fans can attend for $1,500-4,800 total including tickets, visas, flights, accommodation, and food. Mid-range is $3,900-11,200. Visa costs range from $25 (ESTA + eTA) to $400 (full B-1/B-2 + TRV).
Do Indian fans need a visa for the World Cup?
Yes. Indian citizens need a US B-1/B-2 visa (4-12 weeks, $185), a Canada TRV (4-8 weeks, C$100), and can enter Mexico visa-free if they have a valid US or Canada visa. Apply immediately - processing takes months.
Do Nigerian fans need a visa for the World Cup?
Yes. Nigerian citizens need a US B-1/B-2 visa (8-16 weeks), a Canada TRV (6-12 weeks), and Mexico is visa-free with a valid US visa. Nigerian embassy wait times are among the longest - apply NOW.
Is it too late to apply for a World Cup visa?
For ESTA and eTA, no - these are approved in minutes. For US B-1/B-2 and Canada TRV, you are already in the danger zone. Apply immediately, use FIFA PASS for priority US scheduling, and consider expedited processing.
