French Express Entry Draws 2026 - Cutoffs, Dates & How to Qualify

David Okafor
Global Mobility Correspondent··12 min read

French-language Express Entry draws have the lowest CRS cutoffs in the entire system - as low as 379 compared to 515+ for general draws. In February 2026, Canada issued 8,500 French-language invitations in a single draw - the largest in Express Entry history.

With cutoffs declining month-over-month and Canada exceeding its Francophone immigration target for the fourth consecutive year, French proficiency is the most powerful advantage in Express Entry.

This tracker covers every French draw, eligibility requirements, score trends, and what to expect next.

CRS cutoff trend - French draws are getting easier

French draw cutoffs dropped 88 points (481 → 393) in 6 months. The February surge to 8,500 ITAs temporarily pushed cutoffs up to 400, but March fell back to 393. The trend is clearly downward - French draws are becoming MORE accessible. Compare that to general draws which sit at 515+ with little variation. How to qualify for French draws

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Eligible under FSW, CEC, or FST (same as general Express Entry)
  2. French NCLC 7+ in ALL four skills (Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing)
  3. Valid TEF Canada OR TCF Canada test results (within 2 years)
  4. Express Entry profile created and active in the pool

HOW SELECTION WORKS:

  • IRCC designates French language proficiency as a category - all candidates with NCLC 7+ are automatically eligible
  • No separate application - your existing Express Entry profile qualifies
  • You can be invited from BOTH a French draw AND a general draw with the same profile
  • CRS score still determines ranking within the French pool

WHAT YOU DON'T NEED:

  • You do NOT need to settle in Quebec (Quebec has its own immigration system)
  • You do NOT need to be a native French speaker
  • You do NOT need to declare French as your first official language
  • You do NOT need a job offer
  • You do NOT need Canadian work experience

French CRS points - the full breakdown

Your French levelSOL pointsBilingual bonus*Total added
NCLC 5-6+4+0+4
NCLC 7-8+12+25+37
NCLC 9++24+25+49

* Bilingual bonus requires CLB 5+ English in all four skills.

NCLC 7 adds 37 points AND qualifies you for French draws. This means you need a base CRS of 363 to be competitive (400 - 37 = 363 before French). That is achievable for most candidates with a bachelor's degree, 2+ years experience, and decent IELTS.

Next French draw prediction

  • Expected date: approximately May 14, 2026 (±3 days)
  • Predicted CRS cutoff: 390-405
  • Predicted ITAs: 1,500-2,500
  • Monthly frequency established since October 2025
  • February's 8,500 was an outlier (policy signal, not new baseline)
  • March-April stabilized at 1,500-1,800 ITAs and 393-397 CRS
  • The IRCC consultation closes May 24 - they may run a larger draw before then

If you have NCLC 7 French and CRS 400+, you will very likely be invited in the next French draw. If you are between 380-400, monitor closely - the trend favors you. See: Canada Express Entry Reform 2026.

Who benefits most from French draws

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE:

  • CRS 420-510 (too low for general, perfect for French)
  • Already speaks some French (Africa, Europe, MENA)
  • OR willing to invest 6-12 months in French study
  • Age 20-35 (peak CRS range)
  • Bachelor's or higher
  • 1+ year skilled work experience

COUNTRIES THAT BENEFIT MOST:

  • Francophone Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Senegal, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, DRC, Mali, Guinea, Congo): already speak French, just need TEF/TCF certification
  • France, Belgium, Switzerland, Lebanon: native/fluent French, highest CRS boost potential
  • India, Philippines, Nigeria, Pakistan: can learn French for strategic advantage. 6-12 months study = 37-50 CRS points

REAL SCENARIO. A Moroccan engineer (age 30, bachelor's, 3 years experience, IELTS 7.0, native French) has CRS ~480 without French SOL points, but ~517 with French NCLC 9 - eligible for GENERAL draws. For French draws at cutoff 400, they have a 117-point cushion.

French draws vs other category draws

French draws have the 4th-lowest cutoff but are by far the most accessible - anyone can learn French, but you cannot learn to be a physician or military veteran. See full draw analysis: All 2026 Express Entry draws.

Frequently asked questions

What CRS score do I need for a French Express Entry draw?

French draw cutoffs in 2026 range from 393 to 419, with the trend declining. This is 100-120 points lower than general draws at 515+. The lowest cutoff ever was 379 in 2024.

How often do French Express Entry draws happen?

Approximately once per month in 2026. IRCC has conducted French draws consistently since the category launched in 2023, with increasing frequency and larger invitation rounds.

Do I need to be a native French speaker?

No. You need NCLC 7 in all four skills on a TEF or TCF test, which corresponds to approximately B2 / upper-intermediate level. Many successful candidates learned French specifically for immigration.

Can I qualify for both French and general draws?

Yes. Your single Express Entry profile is evaluated against all eligible draws. If your CRS is high enough for a general draw AND you have French NCLC 7+, you can be selected from either pool.

Do I have to live in Quebec if I qualify through a French draw?

No. French Express Entry draws specifically target settlement OUTSIDE Quebec. Quebec has its own immigration system. You can settle in any province except Quebec.

How many CRS points does French add?

French NCLC 7 with English CLB 5+ adds 37 CRS points (12 SOL + 25 bilingual bonus). NCLC 9+ adds up to 49 points. This is more than the points difference between being invited and waiting indefinitely.
