Why South Africans are leaving
South African emigration has accelerated sharply since 2019 - loadshedding, high crime, economic uncertainty, and limited career growth have pushed an entire generation to look outward. Roughly 900,000+ South Africans now live overseas permanently, one of the largest emigrant populations in Sub-Saharan Africa. The trend cuts across race, language, and income, with the steepest outflows from Gauteng and the Western Cape.
Afrobarometer surveys show the most likely emigrants are educated, employed, and under 40 - exactly the demographic the country can least afford to lose. IT, medical, and engineering professions record the highest outflow rates. Top destinations are the United Kingdom (around 28% of those who emigrate), followed by Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UAE. Younger applicants increasingly pair Australia and Canada applications to maximise their odds.
South Africa's emigration advantages are unusual on the African continent. Native English fluency removes the IELTS hurdle most other nationalities wrestle with. Commonwealth membership unlocks the UK Ancestry visa for anyone with a UK-born grandparent. South African qualifications are internationally respected, and cultural compatibility with Anglophone destinations smooths the transition. These structural advantages create pathways most other African nationalities simply don't have.
Loadshedding has been particularly damaging for the IT sector. Cloud engineers, developers, and remote-first teams cannot ship code through stage-4 and stage-6 power cuts. Companies that historically retained senior tech staff with stock options and four-day work weeks now lose them inside six months of a bad winter. Capetonian and Johannesburg tech founders increasingly run their teams from Lisbon, Dubai, and Mauritius - and route their next senior hire offshore by default.
Crime statistics drive the family decision more than any other factor. South Africa Police Service quarterly reports show murder, carjacking, and contact crime in residential suburbs sitting at levels that few other middle-income countries tolerate. Families with school-age children are the steepest part of the outflow, and the Gauteng and Western Cape corridors - Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Stellenbosch - supply the majority of skilled emigrants. The pattern compounds: as more peers leave, the social cost of staying behind rises and the next wave of departures becomes easier.
Your five best pathways
Five visa routes carry the bulk of South African emigration. Each has very different costs, timelines, and eligibility - but together they cover almost every realistic scenario for a working professional leaving South Africa.
| Pathway | Country | Job offer? | Timeline | Cost (ZAR) | PR? | Citizenship? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK Ancestry | 🇬🇧 UK | ❌ No | 3-6 weeks | ~R25,000 | 5 yrs | 6 yrs |
| Skilled Independent 189 | 🇦🇺 Australia | ❌ No | 6-12 mo | R95K-178K | Immediate | 4 yrs |
| Express Entry FSW | 🇨🇦 Canada | ❌ No | 6 mo | ~R30,000 | Immediate | 3 yrs |
| Skilled Migrant Category | 🇳🇿 NZ | Preferred | 6-12 mo | ~R40,000 | 2 yrs | 5 yrs |
| Skilled Worker Visa | 🇬🇧 UK | ✅ Yes | 3-8 wks | ~R50,000 | 5 yrs | 6 yrs |
If you have a UK-born grandparent, the Ancestry Visa is your fastest, cheapest option - no job offer, no points test, no lottery. If you don't, Australia and Canada offer direct PR without an employer.
SARS tax emigration - the step most guides skip
Unlike almost any other nationality, South Africans must formally cease tax residency with SARS to stop being taxed on worldwide income. Skip this step and SARS keeps treating you as a tax resident long after you've left — with consequences that can follow you for years. The 2024 Constitutional Court ruling on dual citizenship made the picture clearer, but the tax mechanics remain dense and trip up most first-time emigrants.
- SARS treats emigration as a deemed disposal of your worldwide assets on the day you cease residency.
- Capital gains tax (CGT) applies to unrealised gains on shares, crypto, foreign property, and other investments - even though you haven't sold them.
- Retirement fund withdrawals (RA, preservation funds, pension funds) are taxed up to 36% on lump-sum withdrawal under the standard tables.
- The R10 million per year foreign capital allowance requires a SARS Tax Compliance Status (TCS) certificate for foreign investment.
- An additional R1 million per year discretionary allowance is available with no tax clearance - useful for smaller transfers.
- The previous 3-year waiting period to access retirement fund withdrawals after tax emigration has been removed under the two-pot reforms.
- Dual citizenship is now legal following the 2024 Constitutional Court ruling - but you must inform Home Affairs before acquiring foreign nationality.

Dual citizenship - the 2024 ruling
In June 2023 the Constitutional Court ruled that the automatic loss of South African citizenship under section 6(1)(a) of the Citizenship Act on acquiring foreign nationality was unconstitutional, and the order was confirmed in 2024. The practical effect is that South Africans can now hold a South African passport alongside a UK, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, or other foreign citizenship without automatically losing their SA status.
The catch: you must still notify the Department of Home Affairs before you acquire your foreign citizenship and apply to retain SA citizenship. Failing to do so leaves you in the same administrative grey zone applicants have struggled with for years. Importantly, the ruling also opens a route back for the many South Africans who lost their citizenship under the old regime - applications for reinstatement are being processed under the new framework.
South African qualifications abroad
South African degrees are generally well-regarded internationally, but formal recognition varies by destination and profession. The institutions vetting your qualifications are different in each country, and so are the timelines. Plan the assessment early - it's often the longest single step in your application.
🇦🇺 Australia
Every points-tested visa requires a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority. ACS handles IT roles (4-8 weeks). Engineers Australia assesses engineering qualifications (8-12 weeks, with the CDR pathway available for non-Washington Accord degrees). ANMAC reviews nurses and midwives (12-16 weeks). SAQA-evaluated certificates are accepted by some authorities as supplementary evidence but are not a replacement.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom
UK Visas & Immigration accepts South African degrees directly for the Skilled Worker visa - no separate equivalency report needed for most roles. Nursing applicants register through the NMC and complete the test of competence. Doctors take the PLAB exam route via the GMC. For regulated engineering positions, UK ENIC (formerly NARIC) statements of comparability are widely requested by employers.
🇨🇦 Canada
Express Entry requires an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), and World Education Services (WES) is the most-used provider for South Africans. A standard South African 4-year Bachelor's degree maps to a Canadian Bachelor's. Honours degrees map to a Bachelor's plus a 1-year post-graduate certificate. Turnaround is typically 4-8 weeks once documents are verified.
🇳🇿 New Zealand
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) issues an International Qualifications Assessment (IQA) used for Skilled Migrant Category points. South African NQF levels map cleanly onto the NZQF, and most universities and technikon qualifications are recognised at expected levels.
One advantage South Africans should never underestimate: native English fluency. South African applicants regularly score IELTS 7-8 or PTE 65-79 without serious preparation - worth 10 to 20 points in Australia's points test and similar uplifts under Canada's CRS. That edge alone often decides invitation rounds.
South African communities abroad
Where South Africans cluster makes a real difference to job leads, school choices, and how quickly a new city starts to feel like home. The map below is dominated by Anglophone destinations and a handful of Gulf cities.
| City | SA Population | Known For |
|---|---|---|
| Perth, Australia | 120,000+ | Largest SA community outside Africa |
| London, UK | 200,000+ | Ancestry visa hub, finance, NHS |
| Sydney, Australia | 80,000+ | Tech, engineering |
| Toronto, Canada | 30,000+ | Growing community |
| Auckland, New Zealand | 40,000+ | Strong SA networks |
| Dubai, UAE | 50,000+ | Tax-free, construction, finance |
| Melbourne, Australia | 60,000+ | Healthcare, education |
Perth deserves a special mention. With 120,000+ South Africans, the city has biltong shops on most high streets, Nando's on every other corner, and a braai culture that has crossed over into the mainstream. The community actively helps newcomers with jobs, schooling, and settling-in logistics — often through Facebook groups and church networks built up over three decades of South African migration to Western Australia.
The Rand factor - salary comparison
Headline salaries abroad look dramatic when you convert them back to Rand, but the more useful comparison is take-home after rent, tax, and groceries. The numbers below are typical mid-career monthly salaries in each country, converted at recent exchange rates for context.
| Profession | SA Salary (ZAR/mo) | UK (GBP→ZAR) | AU (AUD→ZAR) | CA (CAD→ZAR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Software Developer | R45,000 | £4,200 (R98,000) | A$8,500 (R101,000) | C$7,500 (R95,000) |
| Nurse | R25,000 | £2,800 (R65,000) | A$5,500 (R65,000) | C$5,000 (R63,000) |
| Mechanical Engineer | R40,000 | £3,800 (R89,000) | A$7,500 (R89,000) | C$6,500 (R82,000) |
| Accountant | R35,000 | £3,500 (R82,000) | A$6,500 (R77,000) | C$5,500 (R70,000) |
| Electrician | R20,000 | £2,500 (R58,000) | A$5,000 (R59,000) | C$4,500 (R57,000) |
On a like-for-like role, salaries in Anglophone destinations come out 2-3× higher than South African equivalents. Even after higher cost of living — London rent, Sydney groceries, Toronto childcare - most South African emigrants report saving significantly more in absolute terms than they ever could on a Rand salary. The compounding effect over a 10-20 year career is why so many SA families view emigration as a long-term financial decision, not just a lifestyle one.
Deep dive guides
In-depth, step-by-step guides for the routes South Africans use most.
How to choose your destination
Most South Africans qualify for more than one of the major pathways. The decision usually comes down to family ties, the kind of lifestyle you want in the first three years, and how much risk you can tolerate at the visa stage. The shortcuts below are not exhaustive - but they steer most applicants to the right starting point.
- Have a UK-born grandparent? Use the UK Ancestry Visa — fastest, cheapest, no job offer, no points test.
- Want the highest take-home salary? Australia (Perth, Sydney, Melbourne) or the UK (London). London wins on absolute compensation in finance and tech; Perth wins on salary-to-cost-of-living.
- Want the fastest PR? Canada Express Entry — direct permanent residency in roughly six months from invitation, with no employer sponsor required.
- Want the easiest cultural transition? New Zealand — similar climate, similar work culture, similar braai habits. Smaller scale, slower career ceiling.
- Want tax-free income at a single-figure tax rate?UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi). Higher savings ceiling, no PR pathway, and you'll need to plan exit before retirement.
- Don't know yet? Run our eligibility checker — a four-minute quiz that ranks the routes you qualify for today, and the ones you can position for inside a year.
